Spending the Weekend in Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai

How to spend the weekend visiting Chiang Mai based on our adventures.

During our trip to Thailand with Phil's family, we stopped by Chiang Mai after a few days in Bangkok. When planning the vacation everyone agreed that Chiang Mai was a Thailand city we could not miss and would be the perfect way to wind down our adventurous trip.

Chiang Mai is a relaxing getaway and finally gave us a chance to slow down and enjoy our time together. The city offers amazing views and a luxury travel experience unlike anywhere else.

Where to Stay

Khum Phaya Resort and Spa

This hotel gave us the perfect luxury resort getaway in Chiang Mai. The rooms had doors connecting which was great since we went with family. The beds have cute mosquito nets without any actual bugs.

The breakfast was included every morning which was a nice perk so we weren't out exploring with empty stomachs. If you want to go big the resort also offers villas, some of which have private pools.

Even though it's not located right downtown there is a free shuttle or a cheap cab ride. Plenty of restaurants and a mall are also within walking distances.

Where to Eat

Street Food

This is kind of a staple of Thailand but honestly, street food is one of the best options. It's everywhere and is typically a great deal. Plus you can get a variety of options. We found there were more street food options near downtown but there is something no matter where you are staying.

Nice Sweet Place

We swear this is not only a real place but this really is the name. It's a bakery with fun drinks such as boba tea and slushes.

Located in downtown Chiang Mai it was a great place to stop while adventuring around. Plus they have free WiFi.

Wake Up

Probably more known for coffee, Wake Up cafes located throughout Chiang Mai also offer a series of "snow" desserts. Similar to shaved ice but more on the sweeter end. It's fluffy ice, chopped fruit, and typically topped with cream or milk. Our favorite was the mango snow which we got several times while there.

What to Do

Chiang Mai Night Bazaar

Kelsey at Chiang Mai night BazaarThis is also famously known as the "night market" of Chiang Mai located right downtown. If you want to do some shopping, this is the place to go for sure.

There are plenty of vendors with a lot of variety. Probably one of the more popular items we saw for sale is the elephant pants which are a hot commodity in Thailand.

There is also food and drinks at a good price. Be prepared though, this place is very crowded as it is a popular tourist spot.

Tuk Tuk Ride

Tuk Tuk ride in Chiang MaiRiding a Tuk Tuk was one of Kelsey's bucket list items and a must when visiting Thailand. At first, Phil was not sold as they are infamous for being a tourist trap and rip off. Our last day when we had some currency left we finally decided to give it a go and it was worth it.

A tuktuk ride allows you to see some amazing views while getting a more immersed experience. We will advise the best way to not get ripped off is to research typical prices in that area and for that distance and refuse to pay any more. Also if they offer to take you on a stop along the way say no immediately and find another tuktuk.

Doi Inthanon National Park

Similar to other natural parks you are guaranteed amazing views and a perfect chance to explore nature. We took a tour bus but it seems to be pretty accessible to other transit as well. In the park, you will need some mode of transportation as the main attractions are not walking distances.Mea Ya Waterfall in Chiang Mai

Mae Ya Waterfall

This is known as one of the biggest waterfalls in Thailand, or at least one of the best to see. There are walking trails around the bottom and another more hidden trail to the top. We will warn you the view from the top of the trail is pretty but does not allow you to look over a high ledge.

Chedis

Located at the summit of Doi Inthanon are two Chedis or Stupas dedicated to a King and Queen of Thailand for their 60th birthdays. They are also known as Phra Mahathat Naphamethanidon and Nophamethanidon in Thai. Not only are the monuments beautiful to see but the surrounding gardens are perfect to walk around.Chedis in Doi Inthanon in Chiang Mai

Elephant Nature Park

If you want to see elephants while in Thailand then please consider the Elephant Nature Park. They are an animal sanctuary and strive to save animals instead of treating them like an exhibit.

You get to learn stories about some of the elephants' amazing recoveries, get to feed them, and watch bathing time in the river. There are also a lot of stray dogs about eager for some loving. They provide food and there is a cafe as well so you can enjoy your whole day there.
