Selecting the Right RV Park

Selecting the Right RV Park

Since joining the tiny home nation selecting the right RV park has become a top priority. Every new location we live in means finding an RV park that is the best fit for us.

Finding a place for our tiny home while we are on an assignment is a must since we need a place to stay for an extended period of time. We want to make sure we have a safe place where the boys can settle in while we are at work.

Finding the Right RV ParkStaying at RV parks has been perfect. We can't just leave our trailer on the street (it's frowned upon by police) and need a place where we can pop the top of our trailer to get more space.

Since we have now lived in several cities and states with the trailer we have done a lot of searching for the right RV park. We have found that there is a big range in RV parks and all are different.

It turns out selecting the right RV park was more difficult than we thought. Now we know how to find the best RV park for our trailer in each new location.

Decide What You Need

It is important to know exactly what you are looking for in an RV park. We suggest writing it down so you don't forget while on the hunt for the right RV park. There should be things that are non-negotiable for you.

Our main concern is that we have

  1. A place to put the tiny home
  2. Water hookups

I might not sound like a long list but since we have a self-contained, off-gird capable travel trailer this is all we need.

How to Find RV Parks

Decide What You Want

Pool table at a RV ParkYou should also have a list of items that you would like to have but could live without depending on the available options. It's important to have other things that you look for at RV parks, especially since it may help make your final decision on an RV park decision.

There are only about three other things that are nice to have but is not something we need.

  1. Electric hook-ups - Since we have solar power
  2. Bathrooms - This means we have to clean ours less. A shower is also a plus.
  3. Laundry room - Saves us a trip to the laundromat

From there, any other amenities are just extra. We have had some places with a pool table, workout room, arcade, TV, pool, shuffleboard, and many more things. Those things are always great but they aren't things we are looking out for.

Do a Thorough Search

We always start our search with Google Maps as we can put in the address of our new job location and find out what's nearby. Of course, we also do further internet searches and will even ask on internet forums. Different sites that we like to use include:

  1. Campendium - A good place to start as they have both paid and free campsites
  2. Good Sam RV Park Reviews - Good Sam is a nationwide RV club and you usually know if the RV park has Good Sam approval, they tend to be better
  3. RV Park Reviews - Another great site for RV park reviews
  4. Airbnb - A lot of people use Airbnb to find places to stay like apartments but you can also find some results for trailer or RV parking. These usually aren't going to be the most luxurious but they will do in a pinch.

We always start by searching RV Resorts as those seem to be a little nicer. We also search RV parks as well so we know all of our options and there always seem to be more RV parks.

Make sure to get as much information as you can. If you can find pictures that may also help with making your final decision.

Look at Reviews

Reading about RV parks on their site will give you good starter information but you have to remember that the sites will typically only include very good or very bad information. We always read reviews so we know exactly what we are getting.

As we have searched more and more, we have realized that a lot of the rankings you will see are skewed. We have never seen a park ranked above 9/10 across all the sites we check and often anything above 6/10 has been a good place to stay.

Reviews are a good non-biased way of finding out if the area is safe and if the management is responsive. Reviews give you a copious amount of information so you can more accurately make a final choice. We have avoided RV parks in the past because multiple people have said the area isn't safe or management isn't responsive.

We try to write a review for each RV park we stay in so others can learn with us along the way.

Compare

Before we make our final selection we always compare all of the RV parks that came up in our search.

We typically rank them by

  1. Price
  2. Location
  3. Amenities
  4. Ratings

In the end, we decide what is the best fit for us. At times we sacrifice location for money value and vise versa. You have to decide what's most important to you and what place will be the best selection.

Finding the Perfect RV Park

Knowing how to find RV parks that are the best fit for you can be tricky. So far we have had pretty good luck finding a place but each place is very different.

We like the different experiences that everyplace has offered. The good thing about RV parks is they offer short term renting options so if you end up not liking your selection it's easy to switch.
