Zero Waste Coffee While Traveling

Zero Waste Coffee While Traveling

Two things that just seem to go together are coffee and traveling. At least it does for us. There's something about waking up early while traveling and exploring with a coffee in hand.

Options for eco-friendly coffee while traveling can be scarce so we started looking into other options. After some travel and error (get it...instead of trial and error) we have found some options for zero waste coffee while traveling.

Metal Pour Over

The easiest option for zero waste coffee is to start bringing along a zero-waste pour-over. We ordered ours on amazon and not only is it perfect for our nomad lifestyle but it's easy to travel with during vacations.

Make sure to get an option that is not only metal but has the metal, paper-less filter. Some metal options still require the paper filter taking away from the zero-waste aspect.

We have found most places we visit have some way of getting hot water so as long as you have a cup, the filter, and some coffee grounds you are good to go. Since we pack like minimalists we chose the smallest filter which makes about one to two cups.

French Press

This may sound a bit crazy but Kelsey did travel to Iceland and England with a french press in her luggage. This way she could make zero waste coffee in all of our Airbnb rentals.

All you need is hot water and the size of the french press makes it easier to make more coffee at once. Since we got the pour-over we no longer use the French press as it takes up more space and is harder to clean.

Try to buy a glass and metal french press to avoid buying plastic. When packing just give some extra padding with your clothes and it will be fine.Zero waste french press coffee

Reusable Filter

Since it's so lightweight it can be a great option IF you know your destination has a coffee maker. Since we relocate for our job it's an easy way to make zero waste coffee at long term Airbnb rentals.

If you are not traveling often and want a zero waste coffee option for in your home this is probably your best bet. This way you can still get the benefits of a nice coffee maker while using less waste.

Reusable Travel Mug

If there is one zero waste travel essential it is a reusable travel cup. This can help eliminate so much unneeded waste.

We like this option by Swell as it seals well and can be used for hot and cold liquids. If we are on the run and don't have time to make zero waste coffee we can at least get a fill up at a coffee shop with less overall waste.Zero waste coffee in bulk

Buy Coffee in Bulk

This can be difficult with traveling but the main step in making zero waste coffee is to buy your coffee grounds in bulk. We use glass jars to ensure a plastic-free coffee routine.

We buy our coffee grounds in bulk then transfer to a small jar while traveling. Then when the jar is empty it can double as a reusable cup.

Learning how to make zero waste coffee at home is one thing but then trying to incorporate this while traveling can be even more difficult. For us, metal pour-over works best and is an easy way to stay eco-friendly while traveling.
